Update: Israel deploys new “Ro’em” artillery in combat for first time smart system avoids counterfire

The Israeli military has confirmed the first battlefield use of its new self-propelled artillery system “Ro’em” (SIGMA 155) in southern Lebanon.

Operated by the 282nd Artillery Brigade, the system was used to strike rocket and anti-tank positions linked to Hezbollah, with reported precision at ranges of up to 40 kilometers and sustained high-rate firing.

Developed by Elbit Systems, the Ro’em is designed to replace older M109 artillery, featuring automated systems that reduce crew workload and increase firing speed.

Its wheeled platform allows rapid movement and quick repositioning after firing, a key advantage aimed at avoiding counter-battery strikes in active combat zones.

Israel plans to fully replace its legacy artillery systems with Ro’em units within the next three years, with long-term service expected for decades.
