U.S. President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen have signed a trilateral security agreement allowing the United States to significantly expand its military presence in Greenland.

The agreement permits Washington to modernize and expand activities at Pituffik Space Base and establish additional U.S. defense areas at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, with the possibility of creating further defense areas in the future.

The deal also grants U.S. forces broad rights of access and movement across Greenland by land, air and sea, while allowing the United States to develop the Golden Dome missile defense system on the strategically located Arctic island.

Greenland remains under Danish sovereignty, and the agreement explicitly reaffirms Denmark’s territorial integrity and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

The agreement has no end date and restricts non-NATO countries from establishing military installations or maintaining a persistent military presence in Greenland.

The deal marks a major shift after months of tensions over Trump’s repeated push to bring Greenland under U.S. control, replacing the earlier confrontation with a long-term expansion of American military and security access to the Arctic.
