Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has said future wars could happen between Kenya and Uganda if Uganda’s access to the Indian Ocean through Kenyan ports like Mombasa is blocked or treated as a privilege instead of a right.
Museveni says blocking landlocked countries from access to the sea is “madness,” insisting that Uganda is entitled to the Indian Ocean due to its economic and security needs.
He further narrated how it is difficult for his country to build a navy unit for self-defence given they do not have access to the ocean.
He explains how in the past his country has had difficulty in negotiating with Kenya regarding critical infrastructure that requires direct access to the Indian Ocean.
The two countries though have been good neighbors for decades, sharing borders, trade ties in the East African Community (EAC), and occasional trade disagreements.
