There is no competition in the current Super Eagles team. I am realistic but also very patriotic, said 2013 AFCON winner Ejike Uzoenyi, commenting on the current squad and Nigeria’s chances at the 2025 AFCON:
โIf you ask me, I would say there is no longer competition for jerseys among players in the national team. Once the list of players is released for any tournament, you already know who will make the final squad. That is not the best for the team,โ stated the 2014 CHAN bronze medallist.
He added, โIn our time, everyone worked very hard for the Super Eagles jerseys. Any little slip, and you were out of the squad. Even hours before a match, you never knew who would be selected. That level of competition pushed the team because results followed.โ
โA free day was given to us, but only a few players went out. Most stayed indoors, sober and focused, thinking about whether they would make the final list. Some locked themselves in their rooms, while others sat quietly in the hotel lobby. That was how intense the competition, passion, and commitment were back then,โ the winger emotionally reflected on the good old days when men were boys.
“I am realistic but also very patriotic. It is my prayer to see Nigeria succeed, It is 12 years since we last won the AFCON. Nigeria is blessed with massive of quality players and remains one of Africaโs football giants
โI am positive. The team can compete. They are there to compete, not to participate.โ Ejike said.
