Jane is only twenty-one years old when she came to Lagos. She is slim, tall and very beautiful. Men always admired her beauty. She came to Lagos to hustle because she heard the city is filled with opportunities.
“I hope to make it in the city of Lagos. Even though I’m not educated, I know I can find a job.” She said when she arrived.
Life has not been kind to her. She lost her parents when she was still in secondary school. Since then, she has been struggling to survive. When she came to Lagos, she was stranded. She was sleeping in a church which is the only place she was allowed to stay for free.
One day, a friend introduced her to Madam Deborah. Madam Deborah is a rich bank manager who needed someone to stay in the house, cook food and clean. Jane was very happy when she got the job. She thought that her suffering has ended at last.
“Your salary will be N100,000 every month. If you do well, I will increase it for you.” Madam Deborah said.
“I will do my best for you ma. Thank you for employing me. This job means a lot to me. I was stranded, but now, you have offered me a place to lay my head and food every day. I so much appreciate it.” Deborah responded.
Deborah lives in a big mansion in Ikoyi with her husband, Chief Okolo. Their children are already grown and living abroad. They were rich, but they needed someone who would always be around to cook food and keep the house in order. Deborah is too busy with her banking job. Chief Okolo too is always traveling for business. That is why they decided to employ Jane. On the very first day Jane resumed, she was asked to prepare food for Chief Okolo.
“Jane, go to the kitchen and fry egg for me. I love fried eggs. Please, do it well. Don’t make mistakes.” Chief Okolo said. He was sitting in the living room, watching television.
“Yes sir. Just give me a few minutes, your eggs will be ready.” She said.
Jane rushed to the kitchen with the speed of light. She was afraid. There are many things she does not know how to cook. She doesn’t even know how to fry eggs. When her moher was alife, she did not teach her how to do house chores. She did not teach Jane how to cook. Her mother used to do everything for her.
“This is my first time to fry eggs. I don’t even know how to cook. God please help me.” She said when she entered the kitchen.
“How many eggs am I even going to fry? Let me fry 20 eggs. Chief Okolo’s stomach is big, he will finish 20 eggs.” Jane said as she broke 20 eggs and poured into the fry pan. She added five spoons of salt and added 10 cubes of maggi. She also added so much pepper. She scooped milk from a tin and poured into the eggs. She also added 15 cubes of sugar and a tin of liquid milk.
“Chief Okolo will enjoy this egg. All the ingredients are here. I have put all the ingredients. I even added sugar. This will be delicious.”Jane said with happiness in her heart. After about 10 munites, she put the egg in a plate and took it to Chief Okolo.
“Amadioha! How many eggs did you fry?” Chief Okolo asked.
“I fried 20 sir. You know your stomach is big, so I fried plenty so that you will eat to your satisfaction.” Jane tells Chief Okolo.
“Shut up your mouth. Why are you saying my stomach is big? And why will you fry 20 eggs? Is something wrong with your head?” Chief Okolo asked.
“My head is correct sir.” Jane said.
Chief Okolo took one bite from the egg and his face changed immediately. “What is this nonsense? Do you want to kill me with pepper and salt?” He shouted angrily. Before Jane could answer, he carried the plate and poured the eggs on her body.
“What are the ingredientds you used? The thing is tasting like sugar.” The chief asked.
“I added everything sir, including sugar and milk.” Jane said.
“Amadioha! You don’t know how to fry ordinary egg. What kind of housemaid are you? You are completely useless. When my wife returns, I will tell her to sack you immediately.” Chief Okolo said. Jane stood quietly. She did not say anything again. She knew that if she lost this job, she would be stranded again in Lagos with no one to help her.
When Deborah returned from the bank that evening, Chief Okolo wasted no time to tell her what happened.
“My darling, this girl you employed does not know anything. She cannot cook. She cannot fry egg. Sack her before she puts us into trouble.” He said.
“I will talk to her tomorrow. If she is not useful, then we don’t need her.” They did not know that Jane was hearing their conversation from the corner of the corridor. She wanted to cry. She began to think of a plan.
“I need this job. I cannot allow them to sack me. I will do everything possible to stay here. Even if it means using my body, I will do it.”Jane tells herself.
That night, after Deborah went to bed, Jane made her decision. She knew what to do. She waited until the whole house was quiet. Then she walked gently to Chief Okolo’s room. She knocked softly on the door. Chief was surprised. He opened the door and saw Jane standing there in her nightdress. She looked beautiful and radiant in her young body.
“Jane, what are you doing here? Do you want me to wake my wife?” Chief asked. Jane entered the room slowly and closed the door.
“Chief, please I have come to beg you. Please don’t sack me. I know I don’t know how to do house chores. I don’t know how to cook. I’m not good in cooking, but there is something else I can do for you. Something that will make you happy. Just keep me in this house, and I will make you feel young again.” Jane said. Chief watched her with surprise.
“What do you mean by that? Speak clearly before I throw you out.” He said. Jane looked into his eyes and spoke with ferminine tenderness and courage.
“Make love to me. That is what I mean. You know your wife is old. I am young. I will show you different styles. You will enjoy my headquaters. Every night, you will feel like a young man again. If I service your engine, you will feel like a new car. Just let me stay. Don’t allow your wife to sack me. You will not regret it.”
She removed her clothes slowly and went to Chief’s bed. She was shinning under the light. She looked straight at him and spoke gently.
“You can do whatever you want. Just don’t sack me. I need this job.”
