Ada tilted her head, blushing. โA surprise? For me? Obinna, what is it?โ
Obinna took a deep breath, his voice tender. โYes, love. I just want to show you how much I love youโฆ how ready I am to spend the rest of my life with you. Ada, I canโt breathe without you. Without you, my life is nothing.โ
โObinnaโฆโ Ada whispered, her heart thumping.
He held her chin gently and stared deep into her eyes. โFrom the very first day I saw you, I felt something powerful. I knew there was something special about you. You might not love me the way I love you, but I donโt care. All I want is to keep loving you, until the day you finally learn to love me too.โ
Adaโs eyes watered. She smiled weakly and shook her head. โYouโre making me so emotional. Youโre making me remember when Chidi used to say all these sweet things.โ
At the mention of Chidi, Obinnaโs expression stiffened, but he forced a smile. She still thinks of himโฆ he thought, then brushed it off.
โForget about Chidi,โ he said softly. โThis is me Obinna the man who wants to give you the world. And today, I have a surprise for you.โ
Adaโs lips curved, impatience dancing in her eyes. โObim, stop keeping me in suspense. Tell me already!โ
Obinna chuckled. โNo, youโll see it with your eyes.โ He pulled out a scarf. โTurn around.โ
Ada laughed nervously. โEh? What are you doing with that scarf?โ
โTrust me, Adaโm,โ Obinna whispered, tying it gently over her eyes. โI just want to make it special.โ
โHmm, I hope youโre not planning to prank me oh,โ Ada teased, giggling.
Obinna held her hand firmly. โEven if itโs a prank, it will be the sweetest one. Come.โ
He led her carefully outside, guiding her steps. Ada kept laughing nervously. โObim, where are we going? Please donโt let me fall oh!โ
โYou wonโt fall, Iโm holding you,โ he assured.
Finally, he untied the scarf.
Adaโs mouth dropped open, both hands flying to her face. โObinna!!!โ she screamed. โA car?!โ
Before her stood a shiny brown car brand new.
โOh my God! Is this really for me? This is so beautiful!โ she cried, rushing to the car, touching it like a dream. She ran back and hugged him tightly, almost lifting him off his feet.
โThank you, thank you, Obim! You donโt know how happy I am. May God bless you!โ
Obinna smiled, holding her tight. โBless you too, Adaโm. Iโve already hired a driver for you. Heโll take you anywhere you want until you give birth. After that, Iโll ask him to teach you how to drive it yourself.โ
Adaโs eyes glistened with tears. โObim, what did I ever do to deserve you? Youโre too good to me. Even thoughโฆ even though I donโt love you yet, you still love me so much.โ
Those words stabbed Obinnaโs heart like a knife, but he forced a smile. One day, she will love me. I will wait, he thought silently.
Ada jumped again, clapping her hands. โThis calls for celebration! Letโs go inside. Let me go and prepare something special for you. Obim, I feel like dancing!โ
She ran inside happily, not noticing that Obinnaโs smile had faded as her words replayed in his heart.
Meanwhile at the Collinsโ home, Mrs. Collins and Chidi were sitting in the living room, chatting quietly. Sandra walked in, swinging her hips, phone in hand, and dropped heavily on the sofa. She scrolled for a moment, then without looking up, said loudly:
โMrs. Collins, get me water.โ
Mrs. Collins frowned. โWhat did you just say?โ
Sandra raised her voice, still staring at her phone. โDid you not hear me? I said get me water.โ
Mrs. Collins gasped. โSandra, have you lost your manners? I am not your maid. Donโt you have respect at all?โ
Sandra finally looked up, eyes sharp. โRespect? For who? You? Please donโt deceive yourself. I said get me water.โ
Mrs. Collins was stunned, her voice shaking. โSo you no longer call me with Respect again? You don’t call me mom anymore Now itโs just โMrs. Collinsโ? Sandra, is this how far youโve gone?โ
Sandra smirked, her tone dripping with mockery. โWhy should I call you with Respect? What respect do you deserve from me? You better get used to hearing your name because thatโs all youโll get from now on.โ
Chidi touched his motherโs hand gently. โMom, please, just get it. Letโs avoid trouble.โ
Mrs. Collins turned on him, shocked. โChidi, are you hearing yourself? In my own house, you want me to serve her like a servant? Never!โ
โMom, please,โ Chidi whispered again, worried.
Mrs. Collins hissed, stood up unwillingly, and went to the fridge. She returned with a cup of water and dropped it in front of Sandra. โHere. But hear me well donโt ever send me to get you something again. If you need water, go and fetch it yourself, or call Precious. I am not your slave.โ
Sandra smirked, picked up the cup, and instead of drinking it, she poured the cold water straight on Mrs. Collinsโ shoulder.
Chidi jumped up. โSandra!โ
Mrs. Collins screamed. โAre you mad?! How dare you!โ
Sandra stood, her face twisted with anger. โShut up! Donโt raise your voice at me again. Do you think Iโm Ada that you can talk to anyhow? Do you think Iโll sit back and let you treat me like rubbish? No! From today, whatever I say in this house stands. If I say fetch this, you fetch it. If I say do that, you do it. Otherwise, youโll see the other side of me.โ
Mrs. Collins stood trembling, pointing a finger. โYou are crossing your boundaries, Sandra. This is my husbandโs house!โ
Sandra laughed mockingly. โYour husbandโs house? And who do you think I am? A stranger? No, I am Chidiโs wife. This house is mine as much as his. You better get used to it, old woman, because I am not going anywhere.โ
Precious, who had been watching from the door, gasped. โAunty Sandra, thatโs too much. Madam isโ
Sandra snapped at her. โShut your dirty mouth, you little rat! If you speak again, I will throw you out of this house myself.โ
Mr. Collins, who had been standing at the staircase, suddenly laughed loudly. Everyone turned. He kept laughing, his voice booming.
โDad, this is not funny!โ Chidi shouted angrily.
But Mr. Collins only shook his head, still laughing. โThis is just the beginning,โ he said. โYou havenโt seen anything yet.โ
Sandra smirked proudly and stormed off, leaving Mrs. Collins drenched, humiliated, and trembling in shock.
The next day, Mrs. Collins was in the living room ironing her husbandโs clothes. She was humming softly, focused on the neat creases, when Sandra barged in. She wore a short gown, her makeup heavy, and her phone glued to her hand.
She sat down carelessly, crossed her legs, and said in a sharp tone:
โMrs. Collins, go and wash my clothes.โ
Mrs. Collins froze, the iron in her hand. She turned slowly. โWhat did you just say?โ
Sandra didnโt even look up from her phone. โAre you deaf? I said go and wash my clothes. Three gowns, they must be ready before evening.โ
Mrs. Collins dropped the iron with a clatter, staring at her. โSandra, have you completely lost your senses? I am your mother-in-law, not your servant!โ
Sandra finally raised her head, her lips curling. โMother-in-law? Please, donโt flatter yourself. Youโre just an old woman hanging around in this house because your husband pities you. If I say wash my clothes, youโll wash them.โ
Mrs. Collinsโ eyes widened in disbelief. โSandra! Do you know who you are talking to? I am old enough to be your mother!โ
Sandra laughed mockingly. โAnd so what? Old age doesnโt make you useful. Respect is earned, not forced. You want me to respect you? Then act like someone worthy of respect. Right now, youโre nothing to me.โ
Mrs. Collins clutched her chest, trembling with rage. โYou wicked girl! You think because you married my son, you can trample on me? Not in this house!โ
Sandraโs eyes flashed. She suddenly grabbed the hot iron and yanked it off the board. The steam hissed as she waved it close to Mrs. Collinsโ face.
โYou see this iron?โ she hissed. โOne word from you and Iโll redesign your face with it. Youโll be too ashamed to look in a mirror again.โ
Mrs. Collins staggered back, horrified. โYou you wouldnโt dareโฆโ
Sandra smiled wickedly. โDare? Try me, and you will see. Donโt forget, Chidi is on my side. Your own son. If I decide to finish you, who will defend you in this house?โ
Mrs. Collinsโ lips trembled. โSandra, may God punish you for this wickednessโ
Sandra burst into laughter. โGod? Keep deceiving yourself with prayers. If God wanted to help you, He would have removed me from this house by now. But look at me still here, still the queen of this home.โ
At that moment, Precious, who had been peeping, rushed forward. โPlease, Aunty Sandra, donโt threaten Madam like thisโ
Sandra whirled around and slapped Precious so hard she fell to the ground. โYou foolish rat! Keep your mouth shut before I burn you too. In fact, youโll scrub this entire house today without eating, do you hear me?โ
Precious whimpered, nodding, while Mrs. Collins rushed to help her.
Sandra dropped the iron back on the board, dusted her hands dramatically, and picked up her phone again.
She smirked as she walked out, her heels clicking loudly. โRemember my words this is my house now. Whatever I say here stands.โ
Her mocking laughter echoed down the hallway, leaving Mrs. Collins trembling, clutching Precious tightly with tears running down her cheeks.
