New Markets, Bus Stations Coming As Government Is Poised To Spend Over K166 Million

LUSAKA: THE Government, through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), has signed 10 contracts for the construction of new Markets and extension of Bus Stations at a cost of K166, 295, 439.67.

MLGRD Permanent Secretary (Administration) Mr. Maambo Haamaundu stated that, in Eastern Province, the infrastructure component for the improvement and extension of the Bus Stations will involve;

Chipata Bus Station in Chipata District at a cost of K42, 627, 398.50

Katete Bus Station in Katete District at a cost of K21, 702, 338.78

Lundazi Bus Station at a cost of K24, 311, 882.00

Sinda Bus Station at a cost of K15, 037, 762.,50.

Mr Haamaundu stated that the Government will spend an estimated K6,354,947.08 for the construction component of completion of the Namwala modern Market in Namwala District.

He said the Government will undertake the rehabilitation of Nakambala Market in Mazabuka District at a cost of K8, 736, 554.64, and the completion of construction of Mpika Bus Station in Mpika District at K24, 862, 985.43.

He said the rest of the projects include; the construction of Chavuma Bus station in Chavuma District at K8,106, 600.00, construction of Kasama Fire Station and associated external works in Kasama District at K6, 903, 457.74, and the construction of Sesheke Transit Bus station in Sesheke District at K7, 651, 513.00.

This brings the total amount of the funding of the projects to K166, 295, 439.67.

The Permanent Secretary stated that the contracts for all the earmarked infrastructure projects were signed, and the construction works are expected to commence soon.

“As Government, we are delighted that once the construction of these targeted Markets and Bus stations is complete, the new infrastructure will create a more conducive trading environment for both marketeers and bus drivers than what existed before in those Districts,” Mr Haamaundu stated.

The Permanent Secretary said it is the Governments desire to modernise Markets and Bus stations in order to provide a conducive environment for the traders and the general public.

The construction of some of these infrastructure projects is funded with support of KfW, a Germany development Bank.
