BREAKING: MAGA Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth receives nightmare news as the Pentagon’s acting Inspector General announces an investigation into his improper use of a Signal group chat to discuss sensitive war plans.
Trump wanted SignalGate to go away. Instead, it’s exploding in his face.
“The objective of this evaluation is to determine the extent to which the Secretary of Defense and other DoD personnel complied with DoD policies and procedures for the use of a commercial messaging application for official business,” acting Inspector General Steven Stebbins wrote in a memo to to Hegseth. “Additionally, we will review compliance with classification and records retention requirements.
The SignalGate scandal has been one of the most damaging sagas of Trump’s second term to date. It kicked off when National Security Advisor Mike Waltz accidentally added the Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief to an unsecured group chat in which Hegseth and other top Trump officials were discussing plans to strike the Houthis in Yemen.
In his letter to the Secretary, Stebbins warned that he “may revise the objective as the evaluation proceeds,” leaving open the possibility that this probe could snowball into a full-blown crisis for the White House depending on what’s discovered.
Trump officials have tried to argue that none of the information Hegseth shared in the unsecured group chat was classified, but CNN has reported the exact opposite. According to them, it was “highly classified” and included the “exact timing of strikes against the Houthis and the kinds of aircraft and weapons systems that would be used.”
There is simply no excuse for this level of incompetence. The allegedly alcoholic Hegseth was never qualified to be Secretary of Defense and was far better suited to his former job of spreading right-wing propaganda on Fox News. It’s time for him to go.
