In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, the Government of South Sudan through the office of HE Benjamin Bol Mel has officially expelled the United States Ambassador and declared him persona non grata. The move comes amid frustrations over the U.S. Government’s refusal to lift a visa ban on South Sudanese citizens, despite efforts to resolve an earlier immigration dispute.

According to a press release from the Office of the Vice President, South Sudan’s leadership, under President Salva Kiir Mayardit, has also decided to shut down the U.S. Embassy in Juba and is demanding the closure of its own embassy in Washington, D.C.

The dispute stems from the case of Kinitu Makula, a Congolese national also known as Nimeiri Garang, whose deportation led to tensions. After negotiations, South Sudan agreed to admit Makula, but the U.S. reportedly maintained its visa restrictions on South Sudanese nationals, prompting a strong reaction from Juba.

“We regret this situation and we call upon the United States Government to respect the dignity of the people of South Sudan,” the statement reads, accusing the U.S. sanctions regime of harming innocent individuals and damaging the country’s economy.
