The extended and contentious period surrounding Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s political future has come to a definitive conclusion. After a protracted process, the Senate has voted to remove her from office, marking the end of her turbulent tenure.
In an official statement, Senate Speaker Rt. Hon. Amason Kingi announced the outcome of the impeachment proceedings. “The Senate has resolved to remove Hon. Kawira Mwangaza from office,” stated the Speaker. He explained that the charges against the Governor, including “gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, gross misconduct, and abuse of office,” have been upheld by the Senate.
As a result of the Senate’s decision, the statement noted that “the Governor of Meru County ceases to hold office.” This marks the official end of Hon. Kawira Mwangaza’s tenure as the county’s chief executive.
During the final day of the impeachment hearing, Governor Mwangaza’s legal team and witnesses mounted a vigorous defence, challenging the evidence presented by the County Assembly. However, the Senate ultimately determined that the charges against the Governor were substantiated.
The journey that has ultimately led to the confirmation of charges against the Governor and her subsequent removal from office has been marked by significant political tensions and power struggles.
