Opinion: Is Raila an opportunist or a strategist?

Raila Odinga’s political journey has been marked by strategic ‘handshakes’ with Kenyan presidents. These alliances have shaped Kenya’s political landscape in different ways.

In 1997, Raila and Moi surprised many by forming a political alliance through a Memorandum of Understanding. Raila had to dissolve his NDP party, join KANU, and become the Minister for Energy. The deal however ended after a few years due to a disagreement over Moi’s choice of successor.

In 2008 during Kibaki’s regime, the post-election violence led to him becoming the Prime Minister.

Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta

In 2018 during Uhuru’s regime, the election disputes led to constitutional reforms attempt whereby the two had a handshake.

In 2024, a broad-based government is being formed, with top Raila officials nominated as cabinet secretaries in Ruto’s cabinet.
