Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at approximately 17:45 hours at Lubushi area, about 65 kilometers from Luwingu Town along the Luwingu-Kasama road.
He stated that the accident involved a Toyota Hilux registration number BBA 7542, which was being driven from Luwingu towards Kasama by Kennedy Mwila, aged 55.
Hamoonga said the driver had four passengers on board, namely Chishimba Kambwili, aged 55, Mwamba Kambwili, Mutale Kambwili and Kennedy Mambwe, aged 43.
The Police Spokesperson reported that preliminary investigations indicated the accident was caused by excessive speed, leading the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which overturned on the right side of the road.
Hamoonga said tragically, two passengers, Mwamba Kambwili and Mutale Kambwili, sustained fatal head injuries and were pronounced dead on the spot.
He further mentioned that the other occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries:
Hamoonga said Chishimba Kambwili sustained a bruised left leg and complained of general body pains, Kennedy Mwila sustained a fractured right arm and general body pains while Kennedy Mambwe sustained head injuries and a bruised right arm.
He added that the deceased bodies have been transported to Luwingu District Hospital Mortuary where they await postmortem examinations.
Hamoonga said the injured victims are currently receiving medical treatment at Kasama General Hospital.
He noted that the motor vehicle was extensively damaged and remains at the scene of the accident, with arrangements being made to secure it for further investigations.
Hamoonga emphasized that police investigations into this tragic incident are ongoing and urged all road users to exercise caution and adhere to speed limits to prevent further loss of life on the roads.
