NATO allies led by the United Kingdom, Norway and the United States disrupted a covert Russian operation near Norwayβs Svalbard archipelago after Russian deep-sea units were detected testing technology designed to disable critical undersea fiber-optic cables.
The operation involved Russiaβs GUGI undersea warfare directorate, which deployed deep-sea submersibles to simulate the use of a new system capable of damaging subsea cables while potentially leaving little evidence behind. Western forces tracked the Russian vessels and confronted them in the Arctic, preventing the exercise from being completed.
The targeted infrastructure includes submarine fiber-optic cables linking Svalbard with mainland Norway and carrying critical communications and satellite data from the strategically important Arctic archipelago.
The Russian vessels eventually abandoned the operation and left the area. No damage to the cables was reported, but the incident has raised fresh concerns among NATO members over Russiaβs growing ability to threaten critical underwater infrastructure.
The operation is being viewed as another sign of the expanding hybrid-security contest beneath the Arctic and surrounding waters, where undersea cables and energy infrastructure have become increasingly important strategic targets.
