A Florida man, Ryan Wesley Routh, 59, has been sentenced to life in prison plus 84 months for attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in September 2024.

Routh was convicted on all five federal counts, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate. Secret Service agents discovered him hiding near the fence line, armed with a scoped Norinco SKS rifle and steel armour plates, ready to target Trump on the golf course.

During the foiled attack, an agent fired at Routh, forcing him to flee. Authorities later arrested him on Interstate 95, recovering weapons, phones, and a handwritten note detailing the planned assassination.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the attack a direct assault on the nation’s democracy. The two-week trial in Fort Pierce ended with a guilty verdict on all charges.
