The UN Security Council has approved the creation of a new Gang Suppression Force in Haiti, replacing the Kenya-led mission with a stronger mandate.
The force composed of 5,500 troops & police will operate for 12 months with support from a new UN office and the Organization of American States.
The new Force is expected to draw participation from Kenya, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, and potentially the United States, though leadership will likely shift away from Kenya.
The resolution passed with 12 votes in favor and 3 abstentions from Russia, China, and one other member.
