My boyfriend promised me to help me pay my rent. That was six months ago. He doesn’t have his own place so he comes to sleep here often. I cook for him and wash his clothes on Saturdays. We’ve dated long enough to know it’s love. I know his family and they love me. He has a fulfilling job and he tells me nothing will make him change it.
When it was time to pay the rent I called to remind him. He asked me to give him three days. Three days turned into a week and a week to a month until I realized he wasn’t going to pay. I struggled but eventually, I paid. I wasn’t angry with him. I was only disappointed that he didn’t tell me the truth.
After the rent issue, he stopped coming around. I noticed it but didn’t talk about it. Even when I needed him around, he gave me excuses. Days ago, out of nowhere, he said, “I’m finding it hard to provide for you the way I want. It’s hard but I wouldn’t mind if you date another man who’ll give you what you want.”
He wasn’t joking. When I said I couldn’t date two men at the same time he said, “If you find a rich man and you want him, tell me and I’ll leave you for him. You deserve better than what I’m giving you.”
I don’t know if that’s his way of telling me it’s over but he insists he still loves me. I’m not billing him. Apart from the rent he agreed to pay and didn’t pay, there hasn’t been any major demands on him from me so it’s surprising. Now I’m lost. I don’t know if I should still see him as a boyfriend or if I should move on before he breaks me apart. What do you say?
